Flogging Molly ? 'Speed of Darkness': A Review | A&E Playground

Flogging Molly?s new release?Speed of Darkness is a concept album about today?s working man. The first single??Don?t Shut ?Em Down? has the distortion rock guitars and is a great driving gritty song. The track is more Celtic rock flavored and gets thing?s going in the usual Flogging Molly style. Although not earth shattering, it is a darn good working man?s sing along anthem. ?Revolution? may be slightly cliche, but is a good song, although not great. A midtempo song ?The Heart of the Sea? is another Celtic flavored song they do so well. they mix it up nicely with a few ballads as well. ?The Power?s Out? would not be one of them. This gritty hard-edged tune is one of the best of all. The slide guitar and rolling beat is quite impressive.

?So Sail On?, another Celtic flavored song, is more in this vein. A great example of the variety of tempos found throughout. Another rolling beat and gritty song is ?Saint?s and Sinners?, with more Celtic influence, of which there is a lot of. ?Present State of Grace? is an acoustic mid-tempo song that fits in pretty good. ?The Cradle of Humankind? is a long mellow song with piano that ends as a mid-tempo song.

?Oliver Boy? is another Celtic flavored song that has a nifty sing song chorus. This has a beat that really drives this well. The final song ?A Prayer For Me in Silence? have some female vocals in it, something new for Flogging Molly. It is a really nice close to this solid four star release. Bridget Regan who is Dave King?s wife, being the featured vocalist. Flogging Molly are: Dave King (lead vocals, acoustic guitar, bodhran, banjo, spoons), Bridget Regan (fiddle, tin whistle, uillean pipes and vocals), Dennis Casey (guitar, vocals), Matt Hensley (accordian, concertina), Nathan Maxwell (bass guitar, vocals), Bob Schmidt (mandolin, banjo) George Schwindt (drums, percussion)
