U.S. Drone Strike Kills 4 Suspected Militants, Wounds 3 Others In Northwest Pakistan
MIRANSHAH, Pakistan, March 30 (Reuters) - A U.S. drone strike killed four suspected militants and wounded three others on Friday in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region near the Afghanistan border, intelligence officials and militants said.
The remotely piloted aircraft targeted a residential compound used by foreign militants in Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, a Pakistan Taliban commander told Reuters.
"All of those killed and injured in this attack were Arab, they belonged to some Arab country," the commander said.
Intelligence officials, however, said they did not have details on the identities or nationalities of the suspected militants.
The controversial drone program, a key element in U.S. counter-terrorism efforts, is highly unpopular in Pakistan, where it is considered a violation of sovereignty with many civilian casualties.
The United States says the strikes in Pakistan's unruly northwestern tribal regions along Afghanistan border are very accurate and there is minimal collateral damage.
Several militant groups have strongholds in the area, and often take advantage of the porous frontier to launch cross-border attacks on NATO and Afghan forces.
A Pakistani parliamentary committee recently demanded an end to drone strikes on Pakistani territory as part of its recommendations for a new direction of ties with Washington. Plant research reveals new role for gene silencing protein

A DICER protein, known to produce tiny RNAs in cells, also helps complete an important step in gene expression, according to research on Arabidopsis thaliana.
The expression of a gene, when an organism's DNA is transcribed into a useable product, requires activation via a promoter or an external trigger. Plant research to be published in Science helps to show that later stages of transcription are just as important. This is likely to apply to other organisms, including humans.
Termination is the final stage of transcription. Successful termination is dependent on DNA being transcribed into RNA with the correct sections, including a certain length tail.
Scientists at the John Innes Centre on Norwich Research Park have found that where effective termination through the normal mechanisms has not occurred, DICER-LIKE 4 (DCL4) steps in to tidy up. Without termination, transcription continues down the chromosome unchecked.
In this way, DCL4 plays a crucial and previously unknown role in transcription termination. It helps formation of the gene product. DCL4 is more commonly known to play a part in the opposite effect, gene silencing.
"DCL4 is a back-up to termination processes, helping a gene to be successfully expressed," said lead author Professor Caroline Dean from JIC, which is strategically funded by the BBSRC.
The findings may help explain why gene silencing happens so often with transgenes. It was not known that so much attention should be given to the tail end of a gene.
"Our research shows that for successful expression the end of a gene is just as important as its beginning," said Dean.
When termination fails a lot of aberrant RNA is made ? this is degraded as part of a cell's quality control mechanism. This can have consequences for other sequences in the genome that match the aberrant RNA.
"If a gene ends badly, aberrant RNA will trigger silencing pathways," said Dean.
DCL4's ability to step in to rescue poor termination makes it important for both successful gene expression, a previously unknown role for it, and gene silencing.

Michael Lynton becomes CEO of Sony America, Nicole Seligman picked for SCA president
Plenty of moving and shaking going on after the bell today. Hot on the heels of news that RIM's CEO is making major internal changes, in flies word that Michael Lynton has been selected as the CEO of Sony Corp. America. He's coming over from Sony Pictures Entertainment, where he previously sat as the Chairman and CEO. Effective June 27th, Lynton will have a few new reports as well, and unsurprisingly, Sir Howard Stringer is more than encouraged by the move.Stringer stated: "Lynton is an incredibly accomplished executive who has distinguished himself in at least three different fields -- entertainment, technology and publishing." In related news, Nicole Seligman has been appointed SCA President; we're told that Lynton will be overseeing Sony's entertainment businesses (including SME, Sony / ATV Music Publishing and SPE), while Seligman will have responsibility for Sony's U.S. headquarters operations. Hard to foresee what two relatively new names mean for the consumer side of Sony's business, but we'll be keeping a close eye on their first hundred days, for sure. KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) ? Maria Sharapova was confused and Caroline Wozniacki was mad. The linesman was wrong and the chair umpire was right.
Sharapova won the disputed final point after an overrule by the umpire, edging Wozniacki 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 Thursday in the semifinals at the Sony Ericsson Open.
"Obviously you don't want it to end that way," said Sharapova, who will meet Agnieszka Radwanska in Saturday's final.
At 40-30 in the last game, Sharapova hit a second serve that the linesman called long, which would have been a double-fault, but umpire Kader Nouni immediately reversed the ruling and ordered the point replayed. The call couldn't be reviewed because Wozniacki had no challenges left, although TV replays showed Nouni was correct to overrule.
Sharapova was awarded two serves and took advantage with a big first serve to set up an overhead slam for the victory.
Wozniacki, angry about the overrule, declined to shake Nouni's hand and had words with him as she walked to the exit.
"It was a pretty crucial point," she said. "When the ball is so close, I think he should give her a chance to challenge, at least when I don't have any challenges."
Sharapova said she didn't realize Wozniacki had no challenges left, and added she would have challenged the call herself had it not been overruled.
"It's obviously a tough situation to be in," Sharapova said, "because it's so close to the end of the match, and both of us had fought so hard for over two hours."
Top-ranked Novak Djokovic advanced to the men's semifinals without argument, beating No. 5 David Ferrer 6-2, 7-6 (1). Djokovic lost a remarkable 40-shot rally that had spectators gasping as it progressed, but he played a nearly flawless tiebreaker to seal the victory.
"Coming into this tournament, I was confident," Djokovic said. "And I feel that I am playing better and better as the tournament goes on."
Djokovic seeks his third Key Biscayne title and second in a row. His opponent Friday night will be No. 21 Juan Monaco, who advanced on his 28th birthday by eliminating the last American in either singles draw, No. 8 Mardy Fish. The scrappy Monaco dominated from the baseline and hit only eight second serves during the 6-1, 6-3 victory.
"This is the way to celebrate my birthday, playing like this," Monaco said. "I feel proud and very happy."
No. 2 Rafael Nadal, seeking his first Key Biscayne title, plays 2009 champion Andy Murray in the other semifinal.
Radwanska's progress toward her first Key Biscayne final was interrupted briefly in the second set by a power outage that caused a delay of 20 minutes. She then closed out a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Marion Bartoli, who hurt her left thigh in the early going and limped through the rest of the match.
"You're really focused on the match, and I really wanted to finish in two sets," Radwanska said. "Suddenly the lights go off. It was kind of weird."
The No. 5-seeded Radwanska is 0-4 this year against top-ranked Victoria Azarenka and 25-0 against everyone else.
Sharapova, seeded second, improved to 4-0 in Key Biscayne semifinals. She's 0-3 in finals at the event, losing every set.
"I'm happy that I gave myself another chance to go out there and try to change that," said Sharapova, who attended the tournament several times as a fan when she was a youngster training in Florida.
Sharapova will play in her second successive final and third this year. She was runner-up at the Australian Open in January and at Indian Wells two weeks ago.
Wozniacki, a former No. 1 now ranked sixth, fell to 1-7 lifetime against opponents ranked in the top two.
Sharapova was in an attacking mode against the Dane, a relentless retriever whose defense helped her beat Serena Williams in the quarterfinals.
Sharapova went for winners at every opportunity and hit 55, but she also committed 46 unforced errors. Wozniacki totaled only 13 winners and 25 errors.
"Being aggressive is really the key," Sharapova said. "If you let her play many, many balls, she's such a great mover around the court and she can be out here for many hours, and that's not really my game."
Sharapova was a point away from a 5-1 lead in the opening set but then began overhitting her forehand, which allowed Wozniacki to sweep five consecutive games and take the set.
Shrieking with each shot, Sharapova regained her accuracy thereafter. By the time she led 4-love in the second set, she had a 27-4 advantage in winners.
She went ahead 5-2 in the final set before Wozniacki staged one last rally, which fell short amid the fuss at the finish.
"Maria started off really well and played aggressively," Wozniacki said. "She played some good tennis out there. I tried to do my best, and it just wasn't enough."
Sharapova improved to 17-1 in three-set matches since the beginning of 2011.

New CEO at IBM revives Augusta membership debate
As a club that prides itself on tradition, Augusta National again is in the middle of a membership debate it thought it was done with nearly a decade ago.
Just seven days before the Masters, no less.
The last four chief executives of IBM ? a longtime corporate sponsor of the Masters ? have been members of the exclusive golf club in Augusta, Ga. The latest CEO of the computer giant happens to be a woman. Virginia Rometty was appointed this year.
One problem ? a woman has never worn a member's green jacket since Augusta National opened in 1933.
"I think they're both in a bind," Martha Burk said Thursday evening.
Burk, who spearheaded an unsuccessful campaign 10 years ago for the club to admit a female member, said Friday morning on CNN she fears Augusta and IBM will work out a "sham solution" to make the issue go away.
"The company has a huge responsibility here not to undermine its first female CEO," Burk said. "If they accept anything less than full member ? or resign their sponsorship, which is another option ? they're going to undermine their new CEO. And they'll be making a statement that they don't consider her an equal to her predecessors."
Still to be determined is how much traction the topic will muster going into the Masters.
Augusta National, through a spokesman, declined comment in keeping to its policy that membership issues are private. IBM did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
Rometty is said to play golf sparingly. Her greater passion is scuba diving.
Hootie Johnson, chairman of the club a decade ago, ignited the controversy back then when he said that while Augusta might one day have a female member, it would be on the club's timetable and "not at the point of a bayonet."
Burk applied pressure on just about everyone connected with the club and with the Masters, the major championship that garners the highest TV ratings. She demanded that four companies drop their television sponsorship because of discrimination. She lobbied PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem not to recognize the Masters as part of the tour schedule.
It didn't work. The protest fizzled in a parking lot down the street from the club during the third round of the 2003 tournament.
"We did raise the issue," Burk said on CNN. "If we had not done that, this would not be on the table now."
Not only is the debate back, this time it has a face ? Rometty, a 31-year veteran of IBM who has been ranked among the "50 Most Powerful Women in Business" by Fortune magazine the last seven years. Rometty was No. 7 last year.
The chairman of Augusta National ? and the Masters ? is Billy Payne, who ran the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. When he replaced Johnson as chairman of the club and of the Masters tournament in 2006, he said there was "no specific timetable" for admitting women.
The question was raised at the 2007 and 2010 Masters. Both times, Payne said membership issues were private.
Rometty succeeds Sam Palmissano at IBM, which runs the Masters' website from the bottom floor of the media center. According to a list published by USA Today in 2002, the three CEOs prior to Palmissano also were members ? Louis Gertsner, John Akers and John Opel.
As the corporate sponsors became the target, Johnson wound up doing away with TV sponsorship for two years at the Masters to keep the corporate partners ? IBM, Coca-Cola and Citigroup ? out of the fray.
Only IBM returned as a TV sponsor for the 2005 Masters. The others were SBC Communications and ExxonMobil.
Burk said it should not be that easy for IBM to hide if the debate gains momentum.
"What IBM needs to do is draw a line in the sand ? 'We're either going to pull our sponsorship and membership and any ancillary activities we support with the tournament, or the club is going to have to honor our CEO the way they have in the past,'" Burk said in a telephone interview Thursday evening. "There's no papering over it. They just need to step up and do the right thing.
"They need to not pull that argument that they support the tournament and not the club," she said. "That does not fool anybody, and they could undermine their new CEO."
Burk said she would not be surprised if IBM pressured Rometty to say she doesn't want to be a member.
"Really, I don't think it's her responsibility," Burk said. "It's the board of directors. They need to take action here. They don't need to put that on her. They need to say, 'This is wrong. We thought the club was on the verge of making changes several years ago, and we regretfully end our sponsorship to maintain her credibility and the company brand.'"
The debate returns just in time for one of the most anticipated Masters in years. Tiger Woods finally returned to winning form last week at Bay Hill and is considered one of the favorites, along with U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy. Eight of the top 20 players in the world ranking have won heading into the first major of the year, a list that includes world No. 1 Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson.
Now comes a sensitive issue that dogged the tournament a decade ago, and might not go away easily. Women can play the course at Augusta National, but cannot join the club or wear the Augusta green jacket, which is reserved for members and stands as a status symbol in business and golf.
Rometty could become a central figure in the argument over female membership whether she wishes to or not.
"We have a face, we have a resume, we have a title and we have a credible reason to do it that doesn't involve Martha Burk," Burk said.
Burk said she is no longer chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations. She had planned to step down until the first flap with the Masters began in the summer of 2002. Now, she said she runs the Corporate Accountability Project for the council, a project born from her battle with Augusta.

Nevada Gaming Policy Committee Meets on Online Poker

The Nevada Gaming Policy Committee, which hadn?t been convened in nearly three decades, met on Wednesday to discuss the topic of online poker regulation.
The GPC, headed by the state?s governor (currently Gov. Brian Sandoval) last met in 1984, according to the committee website. But with the state in the process of issuing licenses for online poker, the group decided to meet this week. The GPC is an advisory panel that makes recommendations to the Nevada Gaming Commission or the State Gaming Control Board.
The most interesting news from the meeting in Las Vegas was the information about the timeline for licenses to be approved. According to an article by Howard Stutz in the Las Vegas Review-Journal:
So far, more than two dozen casino operators and gaming equipment manufacturers have applied for Interactive gaming licenses. (Gaming Control Board Chairman Mark) Lipparelli said state regulators could conduct public hearings on the first licenses in May or June.
However, websites catering to in-state poker players can?t go live until the technology is approved.
?We have not seen any systems submitted yet for approval,? Lipparelli said.

Sometimes, no matter how much you wish a relationship could work, it just doesn?t? no matter how much you like someone. Sometimes two people just want different things.
This is basically the realization my partner and I came to last night.?It was our second attempt at trying to make?this relationship?work and it just doesn?t. I value our friendship, but we want very different things out of a relationship and that?s ok, at least we were able to recognize it and talk about it honestly. My hope is that we can still remain friends, but I had to take away the romantic/sexual elements. I couldn?t see us being able to stay?friends if things continued on as usual between us.
My relationship with this partner wasn?t a ?failure? as far as I?m concerned. For the most part I think we were pretty happy together but it?s really never been anything other than a casual friendship with benefits for either of us. The bottom line is that I would have liked there to have been more but?the romantic connection wasn?t?there.
I know there are going to be people thinking ?does it have to be there?? Well, yes, on some level. At least for me. I?ve never really been good at casual relationships. Whatever relationships are, they are never ?casual.? I develop very deep bonds with my partners and it hurts when they don?t feel the same but you?can?t force a connection. Ignore advice on 'Idol'? Singers better be sure

"American Idol" contestants Heejun Han and Phillip Phillips both disregarded the mentors' advice on March 21, but it paid off for one of them.
?American Idol? provides each of its finalists the opportunity to listen to and learn from experts every week. But that doesn?t mean that the contestants take advantage of it. Instead, many choose to ignore the fashion tips, song guidance and general notes from the mentors, guests and judges.
For some, like Phillip Phillips, going their own way has been the right move. Others (Heejun Han!) continue to risk the wrath of those in power by dismissing their opinions. But there doesn?t need to be confusion about which way to go. Here?s a quick reminder to the remaining singers about handling ?suggestions,? helpful or otherwise.

Last week, Jimmy Iovine told Phillip to leave his guitar behind, and Tommy Hilfiger tried to give him a makeover. He nodded politely, ignored both suggestions and got nothing but praise for doing so. Elise Testone entered in a more precarious position and likewise was successful despite ignoring most of the advice she was given. When you know who you are and what you can do, trust yourself.
2. ... when it comes from Jimmy Iovine or the guest mentors.
Jimmy has been a very good addition to the show and provides a tiny dose of realism in a show that?s often all about the positive. But as far as his opinions go, he?s like the local official who is always overruled. He can make pronouncements, but the guys who count are the three judges on the appeals court named Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez?and Steven Tyler. Don?t listen to Jimmy if it will put you in conflict with the big bosses.
Similarly, Tommy Hilfiger is on the show to sell product, not to make you a better singer. If his clothes are going to make you self-conscious onstage and sing worse, don?t listen to him. Now that Paula Abdul is gone, how many people really care how fashion-forward you look anyway? And did going with his suggestions do Erika Van Pelt any good?
3. ?... when it?s the opposite of what they told you last week.
This perennially kills some of the younger singers. They?re so eager to please that they do whatever they?re told, which pulls them in a million different directions and leaves them without an identity. DeAndre Brackensick, we're talking to you here.
4. ... when the advice is dumb.
Pia Toscano was an early favorite last year. Then the judges mentioned that they?d like to see her sing something besides a ballad. She gave them what they wanted and sang ?River Deep, Mountain High.? She got the boot.
Contestants have to keep in mind that sometimes the judges are being profound, and sometimes they?re talking to hear the sound of their own voices. Don?t get kicked off the show just because Randy felt the need to say something after five minutes of silence and you took him seriously.
It?s not OK to ignore the feedback ...
1. ... when you?re rude about it.
Look, it?s easy to get a big head because you?re on this hit show singing for millions of fans. You may think you know it all and that any criticism is merely a speed bump on the yellow brick road to stardom. In other words, you may look like Elise for the first couple of weeks of the finals.
But keep in mind that guys like Jimmy wouldn?t have given you the time of day six months ago, and now all these big shots are trying to help you out. Take the advice or don?t, but don?t act like you?re above it all.
2. ... when you waste their time.
It?s perfectly fine for Heejun to stick with his comedy/music act when its his turn to perform. That?s his persona. Besides, Taylor Hicks won by being an entertainer in season five, so there is some precedent for success here. But it?s not OK for him to blow off the mentoring sessions and turn them into his comic foil every week. All that does is make those people mad. Every now and then, every contestant needs to at least pretend to listen and feed the egos of those above them. Which leads us to ...
3. ... when it angers the judges.
It?s one thing to annoy the mentors. But getting the judges on your bad side is bad news. Plenty of viewers base their decisions on what that trio says. So for Heejun, it was smart to make nice with Steven on Wednesday. You don?t want him sniping at you from the stand. He can make your life miserable, and the sympathy votes only take you so far.
4. ... when it?s good advice
Randy, J.Lo, Steven, Jimmy and everyone else on the show may be there mostly because of casting. But as it's pointed out every week, the famouse faces?all have been successful in the music business and know what it takes to reach the top. Shockingly enough, sometimes they know what they?re talking about.
In particular, listen to J.Lo. When she talks about engaging with the audience, she's got just a smidge of experience in putting those suggestions into practice for herself. And in general, taking the judges notes on small things makes them feel good about themselves. If they're feeling good, odds are favorable that they'll say things that make you feel good as well.
