Unleashed: Unleashed review: The Thundershirt for anxious dogs ...

The Unleashed Testing Panel -- coming off another hiatus -- has the word on a product I've been wondering about: The Thundershirt.

Have you heard about this? It's basically a sweater of sorts designed to calm anxious dogs -- pups that become all unglued during thunderstorms and that sort of thing. It's intentionally snug, like a comforting hug, the thought being that the hug sensation will calm?the dog and make?him feel safe. They cost about $36.

Here's what Mike has to say about trying?a Thundershirt?over the holiday weekend with test pup Frankie:

Frankie, our 7 year old American Bulldog, is afraid of thunder and fireworks.? Like many other dogs, he expresses his anxiety by panting, shaking, and trying to hide from the loud noises. He shows the same anxious behavior on long car trips, so our monthly trips to visit family in New York can be quite the ordeal for him.
?
This weekend we tried to lessen his anxiety with the Thundershirt, with mixed results.? The idea behind this close-fitting dog shirt is that gentle, constant pressure provides comfort and relieves anxiety, much like swaddling an infant.?It's a sturdily made, very soft fleece, and Frankie didn't mind us putting it on and taking it off.
?
Our first test was the four-hour car ride to New York on Saturday.?It did little, if anything, to?help with his anxiety in the car, though he seemed comfortable wearing it, and the adjustable size Extra Large fit him well.?
?
So we were very surprised to see how well it worked during the July 4th fireworks.? Wearing the Thundershirt, there was no panting, no shaking, and no hiding.? Frankie even came out on our stoop with us to watch the show.??
??
It may be that the shirt wasn't effective in the car because his anxiety there is related to an actual physical discomfort -- the vibrations of the car and the sudden movements of driving through traffic.? Whereas with thunder or fireworks, the anxiety is caused by noises he just doesn't understand.?

Even though it only worked for half of Frankie's anxiety problems, I think it's definitely worth the price.?I?m sure that we?ll be getting plenty of use out of the Thundershirt with the summer?s fireworks and thunderstorms.??
