If you just spent your whole photography budget on a lens and don't have a case in which to store it you can make a simple mostly-waterproof case using two plastic bottles, a sheet of foam, and a zipper.
Instructables user made her case by cutting the ends from two plastic bottles and sewing them together with a zipper using dental floss and a needle. Use a safety pin to make the holes for the needle on both bottle edges and you can use normal thread but dental floss is stronger so it seems a better choice in this application. Cut two circles and a rectangular sheet of foam and glue them inside the bottles. This makes a basic lens case that offers some protection from falls and water, but you may want to consider waterproofing around the seams if you expect it to get wet.
