Track. Relays Finish Top-Five At Texas Relays

HOUSTON - The University of Houston track and field teams close out the Texas Relays on a good note, as the men's 4x400m relay and the women's 4x100m relay both earned top-five finishes on Saturday.

"We feel like we have a NCAA championship qualifying caliber 4x100m relay on the women's side and 4x400m relay on the men's side," head coach Leroy Burrell said. "The women ran fast enough to finish in the top three today, but we made a few mistakes that we will fix next week"

The men's 4x400m relay team, Errol Nolan, Kelvin Furlough, Xavier Boyd and Doug Kelley, who had the fourth fastest time after the preliminary rounds, returned on Saturday to take second in the event. The group ran a season best time of 3:08.21, taking second to BYU, who ran 3:08.13.

This weekend was the first time senior sprinter Kelvin Furlough was able to compete since January 21, when he was sidelined with a hamstring injury following the Nebraska Indoor Invitational.

"Kelvin surprised me with his performance today," Burrell said. "Our mission was just to get him back on the track. He split a 46.7 today, he's certainly better, but considering how long he's been out, it was a welcomed surprise and we feel like we have our team back and that this group can make a strong push at nationals."

The women's 4x100m relay, Tai'shea Reese, Kiersten Brewer, Alicia Perkins and Grecia Bolton, returned to finish fourth in the finals on Saturday. The group posted a time of 44.36, improving on its preliminary mark of 44.92.

In the field events, Nicole Benton placed seventh in the women's discus throw with her toss of 45.51m.
